WHITE MILANO: FASHION, RESEARCH AND TRENDS IN A SINGLE DISTRICT

During Milan Fashion Week the city changes pace. Shows, presentations, events, showrooms, palaces, industrial spaces, locations that change every time. It is a diffuse kind of fashion, constantly moving around Milan and forcing operators, press and buyers to chase appointments, times and addresses.

WHITE starts from the same ecosystem, but with a different approach. Its perimeter is better defined, concentrated in the Tortona Fashion District. You walk in, cross the spaces, look at the collections, go back, compare different products without having to change area of the city every time. It is a more compact, more readable formula, and perhaps precisely for this reason more useful for anyone who wants to understand what is really moving in product.

For me, WHITE has also become a regular appointment with Erasmo Buglione of BE Management. Together we visit the pavilions, look at the new arrivals, meet companies and operators, and breathe that air of fashion, industry and textiles that we know well and that belongs to a supply chain familiar to us. It is one of those moments in which you understand many things without needing big explanations: all you have to do is see the products, talk to the people who make them, listen to what is moving around you.

And this is where WHITE stands out. At Fashion Week the center of the stage is inevitably occupied by the maisons, the big brands, the shows, the creative directors, the image. WHITE works much more on research and selection: independent companies, emerging designers, international brands still little known, businesses looking for distribution, buyers, attention, positioning.

At Fashion Week we often look at what the system has already recognized. At WHITE we also try to understand what the system might recognize tomorrow.

This is what makes the visit interesting. You don’t go in just to see a collection, but to put together different signals: fabrics, volumes, colors, accessories, contaminations, denim, streetwear, tailoring, resort, lifestyle, beauty. After a while some things start to come back, others stand out immediately. And that is exactly where you begin to understand where the market may be going.

Product is back at the center. Today we see everything immediately. Collections reach social media while they are being presented, images circulate within minutes, videos even earlier. So the problem is no longer seeing. The problem is understanding what is really worth looking at.

WHITE does this work. It selects, brings together, creates comparison. You can touch the materials, see how the garments are built, talk to the people who made them, understand the positioning, the market, the type of customer they address. A buyer looks for what can really work in store, the press looks for stories, and those who work in communication try to intercept languages that in six months may already be everywhere.

Over the years WHITE has grown, become more international, more structured, more attentive to special projects and collaborations, but without losing the research function that sets it apart from an ordinary fashion week. The center is not the single show. It is what happens when many companies are placed side by side.

And today this matters even more, because many fashion boundaries are collapsing. Men’s and women’s wear blend, tailoring enters streetwear, sportswear becomes more sophisticated, luxury goes back to talking about manufacturing, small brands manage to build strong identities without big groups behind them.

At WHITE these things are easy to see precisely because they coexist in the same space.

Not everything you come across will become important and not everything will work. But that is normal. Research is also for this: seeing attempts, intuitions, products still unripe, things that today look peripheral and that in two years we may find elsewhere.

That is why I don’t consider WHITE a simple appendix to Milan Fashion Week. It lives in the same days, benefits from the same international energy, speaks to the same system, but does a different job. Fashion Week builds the great story of fashion.

WHITE still looks for what is worth telling.
