MAX MARA REFERS TO THE THOUGHT OF ANCIENT HYPATIA UNVEILING THE SS 25 COLLECTION

Max Mara’s spring-summer 2025 collection reveals a new dimension of fashion, inspired by the mathematics of Hypatia, the philosopher and astronomer of ancient Alexandria. Ian Griffiths, creative director of the maison, transforms mathematical rigor into haute couture, bringing a mix of geometric precision and bold creativity to the catwalk.

Irina Shayk and Vittoria Ceretti, among the top models who walk the runway, show how each look is designed with an almost scientific precision. The seams of the trench coats and tailored dresses in fresh cotton recall the signs of trigonometry, while the drapes evolve into modern asymmetries, similar to contemporary origami. The elliptical drawstrings, inspired by research on Hypatia’s cones, are strategically positioned to discover and enhance the silhouette, revealing portions of the belly, back or shoulders.

Column skirts and ribbed dresses recall the elegance of ancient priestesses, while new jackets with square shoulders define a slender, geometric figure. The color palette, composed of crystal white, intense black, brown, delphinium blue and silver, reflects a scientific aesthetic, inspired by laboratory elements and a concept of visual “chemistry”.

In this way, Max Mara not only pays homage to the figure of Hypatia, but demonstrates how fashion can marry scientific rigor with aesthetic innovation. With his collection, Griffiths explores the idea that science and fashion can converge in a unique visual experience, confirming Kurt Vonnegut’s quote: “Science is magic that works.”
